Runnin’ with Frogs: A Navy Memoir

Life and times in the Navy

COOKSTOWN, NEW JERSEY, UNITED STATES , August 6, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — Despite the many events in history and breakthroughs in scientific progress, there is still so much to the sea that we don’t know much about–its seemingly endless bounty teeming with life, its amazing vastness, and everything it hides within its depth. Surely the tales of how people spend their lives constantly navigating these waters would both entertain and inspire awe. What stories would a man have for us given that his career was spent mostly in the waters? George Rhodes Worthington gives us just that as he looks back on his time in the US Navy in “Running with Frogs: A Naval Memoir“.Born in Louisville Kentucky in 1937, George Rhodes Worthington moved around a lot growing up and found himself joining the US Navy after his graduation from the US Naval Academy in 1961 where he received his Ensign Commission. His first tour was with the USS Halsey Powell, which allowed him to witness and experience first-hand the Christmas Island bomb tests in 1962. His love of the waters took him through a career spanning several tours of duty, holding positions of command and leadership, and even a bit of politics while working with the Pentagon. Worthington also found his passion for sporting activities and participated in the International Naval Pentathlon in Sweden and became a member of the Military Sport Council swimming competition in Barcelona.

“Running with Frogs: A Naval Memoir” gives its readers fresh insights on a man’s successful career in the military and captivating tales of having spent so much time in or around water. Readers are treated to Worthington’s career highlights, the ups and downs of his tours of duties, his passion for sports, and the challenges of political influence. Military and Civilians alike would share in the joys and the struggles of Worthington’s career and fondly look back on the memories he shares in this book, allowing a better appreciation for the men and women who serve this great nation.

Team P10 Takes Home Gold By a Record Breaking Margin
Team P10 Takes Home Gold By a Record Breaking Margin

Team P10 Athletes

P10™ Performance Athletes Andrea Nisler and Taylor Williamson Lead the Charge at the 2021 NOBULL Crossfit Games.

HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, August 5, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — As fans and enthusiasts from around the globe gather once again in Madison WI, all eyes were on Team Mayhem Freedom as they looked to take home the Affiliate Cup victory back to its rightful home in Cookeville, TN. The team, captained by Rich Froning saw a roster of all new faces this year but that didn’t stop the dynamic foursome from securing their 6th Games Victory. Not only did the team win, they went on to amass a whopping 1237 points and beating their next closest competitors by 279 points, earning them the record for largest win margin in Crossfit Games team history. “Nothing quite beats the feeling of being back in Madison, in front of a packed coliseum. After a year of many unknowns and struggles for the entire community, it was amazing to get back out on the floor and show the world how hard we have been working this year. We have created a strong team, and we are proud of our efforts over the past week,” said Taylor Williamson of Team Mayhem Freedom. Andrea Nisler also added, “It takes a complete team effort to put together that type of performance over the course of the thirteen events. Things clicked very well for us starting from the first event on Thursday.”

“We are so excited to partner up with Andrea and Taylor and celebrate this tremendous win, “ said Nic Johnston, P10 Performance Brand Manager. “At P10 Performance our goal is to provide our athletes with the very best, no matter their goals. We have worked tirelessly to provide our athletes with a full line of performance products that aim to supply training support, supplemental needs, and overall recovery.”

After a year away from the Games on the team side of competition, the return to Madison was a special one not only for the spectators but the athletes as well. As the sport returns to its full form, we are extremely grateful to be a partner of this year’s NOBULL Crossfit Games. The Games atmosphere was back in full force and the sense of community was felt in every corner of the venue. This week was a huge step in the right direction for the progression of the sport, and we couldn’t be more proud to be growing alongside this global event.

Join us for our third Let's Talk About Hanford
Join us for our third Let’s Talk About Hanford

We’re thrilled to announce our third virtual conversation in our Let’s Talk About Hanford Series, this time in collaboration with our friends at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Tune in 5:30 p.m. Aug. 25 on Facebook or WebEx for Let’s Talk About Hanford: Salmon, Sturgeon, and more.

For this third discussion, we’re going to explore the Columbia River in the Hanford Reach, and the many fish that can be found within. We’ll cover other Hanford habitat and wildlife in an event later this fall.

Paul Hoffarth, of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, will join this conversation as our featured guest. Hoffarth is the District 4 Fish Biologist, serving Benton and Franklin Counties, and has been working in the Tri-Cities since 2000. His primary duties include monitoring local fish populations, including sport fishery opportunities and harvest estimates.

Hoffarth will be joined by Ginger Wireman, Ryan Miller, and Daina McFadden from our agency’s Nuclear Waste Program communications team.

We will begin the evening with a presentation by Hoffarth about the Columbia River and fish in the Hanford Reach. Following the presentation, we’ll take your questions live!

Join the conversation

In our last event, we introduced options to stream on both Facebook and WebEx. We will keep these same options for this event.

For the Facebook livestream, watch live at the time of the event from our Hanford Facebook page or the Facebook event page.

To join the WebEx stream (audio and video):

Join by phone (audio only):

  • 1-415-655-0001 US Toll
  • 1-206-207-1700 United States Toll (Seattle)
  • Access Code: 177 640 0158
  • Event password: 84874547 (when joining by phone only)

Can’t attend the conversation on Aug. 25? The event recording will be available on our Facebook page and YouTube channel shortly after the stream ends. You can also submit your questions to us about the river and fish in the Hanford Reach in advance of the live event. We’ll make every effort to answer your submitted questions live during the Q&A session.

What it’s all about

We first announced these virtual events in late March, with the aim to help you better understand all things related to Hanford and its complex nuclear cleanup.

Beginning during World War II, Hanford produced plutonium for decades before shifting to a new mission in 1989 to clean up the massive amounts of waste and contamination that production left behind.

These conversations blend high-level easy-to-understand presentations and conversations with you about Hanford topics, ranging from specific cleanup projects and history of the site to the Hanford Reach habitat and wildlife that call it home.

We’re gearing these virtual discussions toward those unfamiliar with Hanford, those who want a refresher, or to expand existing knowledge about Hanford. We’ll start each event with a short high-level presentation on that day’s topic, followed by a live Q&A with those watching.

Have any questions or ideas for future conversations? Drop us a line, and we hope to see you virtually during our third livestream!

Missed the introduction video or first two conversations? Check them out on YouTube:

$10,000 in total scholarships will be awarded to 10 recipients investing in student athletes and young women interested in the business of sports.

My parents’ vision was one of equitable inclusion, and one that provided opportunities for women to pursue careers in professional sports.”
— Mark Howe

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICHIGAN, USA, August 5, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Howe Foundation, founded by hockey legend Gordie Howe and his wife Colleen Howe, has announced that applications are open for the 2022 Howe Foundation award scholarships. The $10,000 in total scholarships will be awarded to 10 recipients based on Gordie and Colleen Howe’s passion for helping kids get involved in athletics and supporting women interested in careers in the business of sports. Applications will be accepted through December 15, 2021 with winners notified on February 28, 2022.

“The Howe Foundation has a longstanding history of giving back to the community and providing opportunities to young people interested in participating in sports,” said Mark Howe, son of Gordie and Colleen and Howe Foundation Board Member. “We look forward to continuing the legacy of Colleen and Gordie by using these scholarships to invest in the future of student athletes and young women seeking business careers in sports.”

A Hall of Famer On and Off the Ice

While the name Gordie Howe is synonymous with hockey, it was his philanthropy off the ice that those who knew him found most inspiring.
“From offering his compassion and time to support a wide variety of causes, to working with disabled children, Gordie was a powerful example of giving back to the community,” said Mark Howe. “Gordie believed that participating in sports could be a transformative experience for a young person, and he was committed to ensuring every child had the opportunity to play. We are committed to keeping that legacy alive and continuing to provide support to young athletes.”

Laying the Groundwork for Women in Professional Sports

As accomplished as Gordie Howe was on the ice, Colleen Howe was formidable off it, breaking barriers as a sports agent who founded Power Play International and Power Play Publications, managing the business interests of both her husband in addition to their sons Marty and Mark. Colleen was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame for her work in youth hockey. Additionally, Colleen was one of the founders who brought the Junior Red Wings, the very first Junior A hockey team to the United States.

“My parents’ vision was one of equitable inclusion, and one that provided opportunities for women to pursue careers in professional sports,” said Howe. “If the Howe Foundation can contribute even a small percentage to the future success of today’s youth through our annual scholarship program, it would really warm their hearts and make my parents proud.”

Since its founding in 1994, the Howe Foundation has donated more than $125,000 in monetary and in-kind donations to charities across the United States and Canada.

Wildlife Commission Seeks Angler Input at Tuckertown Reservoir
Wildlife Commission Seeks Angler Input at Tuckertown Reservoir
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 4, 2021) – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is partnering with Cube Yadkin Generation LLC, an affiliate of Eagle Creek Renewable Energy and owner and operator of the Yadkin Project, to increase fisheries habitat at Tuckertown Reservoir.

The Wildlife Commission is planning to add 100 artificial and natural structures at 37 sites to provide additional fishing areas for the angling public at the reservoir. The artificial reefs will be constructed of long-lasting plastic materials and will be installed at depths of 10 to 20 feet. In addition to the fish attractors, larger trees at selected locations will be felled into the water and cabled in place to supplement natural shoreline habitat. These fish attractors are intended to help offset the loss of aquatic vegetation in the presence of sterile grass carp.

Sterile grass carp are a practical and cost-effective means of controlling invasive aquatic weeds. In 2014 and 2016, sterile grass carp were stocked at Tuckertown Reservoir to control hydrilla, a state and federal noxious weed. Unfortunately, the Grass Carp also consumed beneficial native plants, resulting in a reduction of submersed aquatic vegetation at the reservoir. In addition, lyngbya (black mat algae) increased, which is a nuisance, mat-forming cyanobacterium that grass carp typically do not eat. This created a nuisance for anglers because of its hook-fouling properties. NC State University is currently developing a project to help determine effective methods of controlling lyngbya in Tuckertown Reservoir and Badin Lake.

“We want the public to continue to have fantastic opportunities to catch fish, particularly largemouth bass and crappies, which are well known in these waters,” stated Troy Thompson, a fisheries biologist with the Wildlife Commission. “It’s important that we listen to what the angler community suggests. They know this body of water well and their input will help our agency make the most educated decisions. We want the reservoir to thrive and be enjoyed by many generations to follow.”

The Wildlife Commission is seeking angler input on potential locations for these fish attractors. Anglers can send their suggested sites, including GPS coordinates or a detailed site description, to Troy Thompson at troy.thompson@ncwildlife.org or 910-439-2006.

The project is funded through the Sport Fish Restoration Program, which utilizes state fishing license money and federal grant funds derived from federal excise taxes on fishing equipment and motorboat fuels, and by a donation from Cube Yadkin Generation.

The Olympic Truth of Family Meals
The Olympic Truth of Family Meals
Aug 4, 2021

By David Fikes, Executive Director, FMI Foundation

I am a self-confessed Olympics junkie. Every four years (well five, this time around) I become immersed in all manner of sporting events and hastily channel-surf past any other program. My interest is partly patriotism, but mainly, I’m fueled by a fascination with the people possessing the focused drive to invest years of their lives training to compete on this global stage. This year – given the dramatic COVID-19 pandemic backdrop – I have found the post-competition athlete interviews even more emotionally charged than usual. And though the array of Olympic athletes being questioned represent different nations and sports, there is a common thought-thread in their responses. They all find some way of saying ‘I didn’t get here by myself.’

I’ve heard swimmers, divers, gymnasts, runners, volleyballers or badminton players, all being interviewed. The sport and the language didn’t matter. When it came time to talk about the discipline, passion, and singular dedication necessary to excel, they all spoke of the support, encouragement, and inspiration they received from their family. Sometimes it was a single family member, more often it was the entire family unit and on occasion it was a whole community, including a meaningful coach. In doing so, Olympic athletes offer us a consistent reminder of how profoundly vital family support is to the individual’s ability to persevere, overcome adversity and find success.

The pandemic has brought its share of adversity and disruption, but what the Olympic athletes reinforce is that family empowers us to stay healthy physically, emotionally, and mentally. The side benefit of America’s pandemic pivot of sharing more meals at home is the increased health and emotional support that has accompanied our sharing food at the table with our family – even if that had to be accomplished virtually. According to research fielded by FMI and sponsored by the FMI Foundation, of those having in-person family meals, 70% feel more connected!

Just as the pandemic provides an intriguing backdrop to this year’s Olympics, it also adds a different feel to this year’s celebration of National Family Meals Month™ in September. Our theme of Stay Strong with Family Meals acknowledges the strength we have gained and encourages everyone to continue enjoying the nutritional, economic and social benefits of family meals. To help your company share the joy of family meals, the FMI Foundation has toolkits and resources on our website, www.fmifamilymeals.com, for retailers, suppliers, and community collaborators to leverage and make their own. We also have an online toolkit providing step by step guidance for those wanting to get September declared as Family Meals Month in their state or local municipality.

While planning for September’s celebration, we encourage you to partner with other companies to amplify each other’s efforts. This year, the FMI Foundation will be partnering with the American Heart Association and Common Threads to help us spread the message about the strong mental and physiological advantages of family table time.

Please let us know how you’ll be celebrating National Family Meals Month this September so that we can include your company on our partners page. We also encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or need help or materials for your activation. You can email the FMI Foundation team at familymealsmonth@fmi.org

Most of all, I hope you will celebrate family meals by enjoying many meals with your family this September and beyond. Who knows, you may be dining with a future Olympic champion.

Andrea Jaeger shares her story through ‘First Service’ book

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, August 3, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — Andrea Jaeger has received tons of attention for her serves over the net. But it has been her service off the court that’s been the real “ace.”Her book, First Service: Following God’s Calling and Finding Life Purpose, chronicles how the tennis phenomenon dedicated her life to religion and philanthropy. Finding the sport uninspiring and desiring a greater purpose, the memoir recounts how the young tennis star discovered her true calling.

After retiring from professional tennis in 1985, Andrea Jaeger immediately embarked on a new career of service. Her global reach has grown since then, leading to the creation of the Little Star Foundation. The nonprofit has a simple goal. It hopes to improve the lives of children who are sick or in need, encouraging these unprivileged participants to “endure just one more day” in the face of adversity. Programs are designed to support this, with activities that boost each child’s mental, physical, and emotional health. Now in its 36th year, the Little Star Foundation has earned countless honors and achievements for their work. Even without the awards, the organization stands out as her greatest accomplishment.

But Andrea Jaeger dominated on the court as well. In First Service, she details her rise to fame at an early age. When only 15 years old, she was the youngest to ever be seeded at Wimbledon. At the time, this was a record. She went on to earn the No. 2 ranking in the world, eventually reaching the semifinals or finals at least once in every Grand Slam. Although tennis provided an opportunity, it was never her real mission. In fact, none of this would have been possible without tennis. Andrea Jaeger used her platform (and proceeds) to fuel her true passions. Even today, she competes in celebrity tournaments, only to donate all her earnings.

She hasn’t been without her own struggles. However, when injuries derailed her career, Andrea Jaeger continued to persevere. It’s evident that faith drove her pursuits. Her devotion to God has been active throughout her entire life. The pages of First Service are littered with her commitment, belief, and unwavering faith. In telling the story of her life, Andrea Jaeger also shares a spiritual journey that began even when she was a child.

Although First Service was initially published in 2004, it’s never been more relevant. Mental and personal health amongst athletes has gained more prominence (and headlines). As many in professional sports dedicate more time away from the court, Andrea Jaeger was a trendsetter in many ways. In fact, she led the charge. She walked away from the height of her game to pursue other, more rewarding interests.

Adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee sanctions Issa Hayatou
Adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee sanctions Issa Hayatou

FIFA Ethics CommitteeDownload logo
The adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has found Mr Issa Hayatou, former CAF president, former FIFA (FIFA.com) President ad interim, FIFA Vice-President and member of the FIFA Council, as well as Honorary FIFA Vice‑President, responsible for having breached article 15 (Duty of Loyalty) of the FIFA Code of Ethics.

The investigation into Mr Hayatou’s conduct in his position as CAF president concerned his involvement in the negotiation, conclusion and signature of the memorandum of understanding and contractual agreement for the commercialisation of media and marketing rights of competitions organised by CAF with the company Lagardère Sports between 2014 and 2017.

In its decision, following an extensive hearing, the adjudicatory chamber ruled that, based on information gathered by the investigatory chamber, Mr Hayatou had breached his duty of loyalty in his position as CAF president, by entering, in the name and on behalf of the confederation, into an anti-competitive agreement with Lagardère Sport which was detrimental and caused significant damage to CAF (both financially, in the amount of EGP 200 million, as well as to its reputation).

Consequently, the adjudicatory chamber found that Mr Hayatou had breached article 15 of the current edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics and sanctioned him with a ban from taking part in any kind of football-related activity at both national and international level (administrative, sports or any other) for one year. In addition, a fine in the amount of CHF 30,000 has been imposed on Mr Hayatou.

The motivated decision was notified to Mr Hayatou today, the date on which the ban comes into force, and has been published on legal.FIFA.com.

POST image The European Times TV
“Those who are against the World Cup every two years are selfish people who discriminate against billions of people just to protect their own commercial interests”

The President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and FIFA Council member, Fouzi Lekjaa, is a strong supporter of the project of a World Cup every two years. In this interview, he explains his choice and lists the many benefits it would bring to the African continent.

Le360 Sports: During the 71st Congress of FIFA, held on 21st of May 2021, you have supporter the idea of organizing a World Cup every two years. Why?

“A World Cup played every two years instead of four will give African teams more chances to improve by competing more often with the best. This change will also offer many more opportunities for African talents to develop and shine at the world stage. Only eight teams have won the World Cup. And most part of the participants are always the same. We need to make the World Cup a much more inclusive competition not only with the already approved increase of teams but also with an increase in the frequency.”

How will that affect the Morocco national team?

“Morocco is a great nation of football and in almost 100 years of world cups we only participated in the tournament in five occasions. This is not only due to the extremely difficult qualifying but essentially because of the periodicity of the competition.”

But this won’t make the World Cup lose its appeal?

“A great competition is forged by the quality and meaning of it not because is rare. We have great competitions in all sports, including football, played every year and every two years (like the AFCON) and they don’t lose interest, nor the fans lose appetite for them. The World Cup will keep being an amazing competition while at the same time being more democratic and giving less developed nations an opportunity to participate and get better.”

We heard one or two voices, namely from UEFA, saying they were against this idea. What do you think about it?

“I have to say I was extremely disappointed with some reactions on this matter. The international match calendar is not decided after 2024 so people should sit down and talk about the best solutions for everyone not just for those who enjoy all privileges, who have all the resources and look at Africa and other continents as second-class people that they have to put up with. It’s easy to make headlines and campaigns against racism and discrimination but what Africa wants is concrete actions and good will, not arrogant, dictatorial, and discriminatory positions while refusing to debate ideas. One more month every four years. We are not asking for something unrealistic. The ones who are against the World Cup every two years are in fact egotists because they are discriminating millions of people just to protect they own commercial interests. They should support the possibility to give hope to hundreds of million of people of our continent.”

Do you think some federations can prevent this project from going ahead?

“FIFA is nowadays a democratic organization and Europe shows us the importance of respecting the opinion of the majority in a true democratic spirit. We hope that everyone in Europe respects democracy. Fortunately, there are a lot of European people and Federations who support the idea.”

This idea has been defended by one of the most experienced coaches in Europe…

“Arsène Wenger is someone who thinks about football for decades, not only inside the pitch. He has been doing an analysis and studying how football is becoming more and more unbalanced and how people who are not born in certain privileged parts of the world don’t have the same chances of others. It’s irrational and absurd to criticize his proposal without even reflecting on what is happening and on ways to stop and reverse this tendency. To play the World Cup every two years won’t be the miracle solution to everything that is wrong, but it can certainly be a positive contribution.”

. Volker Holzmeyer (41) is to join Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) as the new President and CEO as of January 2022. He succeeds the previous incumbent Daniel Armbruster (53). The two managers will work closely together in the coming months to take a joint look at the specific features of the market, the customers and processes involved in the central sales and marketing of Porsche race cars and spare parts in the USA and Canada.

“North America has always been of tremendous significance to Porsche. Having the right person in charge there to manage and steer our largest motorsport market, therefore, is very important,” emphasizes Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “Daniel Armbruster has steered PMNA through a difficult time with perfect precision, and we are extremely grateful to him for having done that. Motor racing is changing fundamentally these days in terms of the approach, the technology and accessibility. And that requires visionary thinking as well as a steady hand. Volker Holzmeyer is equipped with everything needed to cope with the upcoming challenges facing the entire sport and indeed Porsche as well.”

Volker Holzmeyer has extensive experience in motorsports, in addition to sales, marketing and after sales. Born in Germany, he joined Porsche in 2004. Holzmeyer knows the North American market very well, having been responsible for the international marketing of race cars, in addition to business development in the motorsport sector. His position as product manager for all vehicles used in Porsche Club sport events will also pay dividends.

“Daniel Armbruster has taken the company to a new level during his tenure with PMNA and has been a driving force in bringing the Porsche Carrera Cup North America to life,” says Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Product Lines 911 / 718 at Porsche AG and also Chairman of PMNA’s Shareholder Committee, praising the skills of the departing CEO. “And now with Volker Holzmeyer, we have an experienced and long-time Porsche enthusiast following in Daniel’s footsteps, which means that PMNA will continue to be in very good hands. Reliability and continuity have always been among the key factors for the success of Porsche Motorsport in North America.”

During his tenure since 2017, Daniel Armbruster, among other things, was responsible for establishing the first Carrera Cup on the North American continent. In doing so, he also led negotiations with the title sponsor of the one-make racing series: the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands. In addition to that, he was the man behind the growth that took place in the company’s established business areas, he led PMNA through times of great challenge and has defined Porsche Motorsport’s strategy in North America to 2030.

How to take a hunter education class or enroll in the Trial Hunting Program in Utah
How to take a hunter education class or enroll in the Trial Hunting Program in Utah

Salt Lake City — If you are interested in trying hunting for the first time this fall or winter, you’ll need to look into either taking a hunter education class or participating in the Trial Hunting Program. If you’ve never taken hunter education, rest assured that it isn’t too late; but don’t put it off because classes fill up quickly!

January and February are the most popular months for hunter education courses, so people can apply for the big game hunt drawing. The next-busiest months are July and August, right before the fall general-season big game hunts.

To hunt in Utah, everyone born after Dec. 31, 1965, must complete a state-offered hunter education class or participate in the Trial Hunting Program. Here’s what you need to know to enroll in either:

How to take a hunter education course

You have the option of taking a traditional in-person class led by an instructor or an online course followed by an in-person field day. Both options include a final written test and the “field day” with hands-on skills demonstration and a live-fire shooting exercise at the end.

The online course will teach you about firearm safety, hunter responsibility and ethics. It can be taken at your own pace. There are a few options for online courses. They range in price from $13 to $29, and you can find links to the approved courses at the bottom of this Utah Hunter Education webpage.

“If you have a young child who’s taking the course, you can help them understand what they’re learning by sitting by their side and going through the course material with them,” RaLynne Takeda, hunter education program manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said. “Your child can also take the course at his or her own speed, and they can go back and review the material as often as they like.”

The instructor will provide additional details about the field day after you register for the online hunter education course. Once you finish the online portion of the course, you’ll print your proof-of-completion document. Then, you can buy a hunter education registration certificate online. The certificate costs $10 and is required before you can do the field day.

Trial Hunting Program

Utah’s Trial Hunting Program is another way to get in the field this fall. The program gives you a chance to try hunting with an experienced hunter and see if it is something you’d like to pursue. You are not required to take hunter education to participate in this program.

You must be at least 12 years old to join the program. You just need to be accompanied by a licensed hunter who is 21 or older. To participate, you must complete a brief online orientation course, which can be found on the DWR website. You also need to buy a hunting license and the permit for the species you’d like to hunt. In this program, you are eligible to obtain the following licenses and permits:

  • Combination or hunting licenses (good for hunting all small game, including upland game and waterfowl)
  • General-season deer and elk permits
  • Permits to hunt bear, cougar, sage-grouse, sandhill crane, sharp-tailed grouse, swan and turkey

You can learn more about the program on the DWR website.

“Both of these are great ways to get started in hunting, a sport that not only allows you to get fresh, locally sourced meat, but also gives you a unique opportunity to get outdoors and make memories with your family,” Takeda said. “Hunting is also an important tool in managing healthy wildlife populations.”

There are many exciting encounters for fans around the globe to look forward to as rugby sevens makes its second appearance at the Olympic Games following an outstanding debut in Rio, which attracted an estimated 30 million new fans to the sport.

Host nation support will be focused on Pool C where Japan are grouped with Rio 2016 Olympic champions Australia, alongside a powerful USA team, who qualified directly for Tokyo after finishing runners-up in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2019 and reached the medal podium in five of the six rounds. The pool is completed by Olympic debutants China, who secured their place in Tokyo with an emphatic 33-0 victory over Hong Kong in the Asian qualifier final.

Pool B is the only pool without an Olympic debutant as Rio 2016 bronze medallists Canada are joined by France, Fiji and Brazil. France were in fine form as they swept all before them to qualify for Tokyo via the World Rugby Sevens Repechage in Monaco last month. Brazil qualified for Tokyo thanks to a 28-15 victory over Colombia in the South American qualifier, while Rio 2016 quarter-finalists Fiji overcame Papua New Guinea to qualify from Oceania.

In Pool A, current Rugby World Cup Sevens and World Series title holders New Zealand will face the Russian Olympic Committee team, Great Britain and Kenya. New Zealand beat both Kenya and Great Britain on the way to claiming the silver medal at Rio 2016, while Russia ended the Black Fern’s record-equalling 37-match winning run on the Series with a 17-17 draw in Kitakyushu in April 2019. World Rugby Chief Executive Alan Gilpin said: “Following a fantastic debut Olympic Games in Rio five years ago, we are looking forward to another spectacular showcase of the best of women’s rugby sevens in front of a huge global TV audience over the next three days in Tokyo, culminating in the medal matches on ‘Super Saturday’.

“Not only are the players exceptional, world class athletes, they are incredible role models both on and off the pitch, combining rugby’s core values of respect, integrity and teamwork, with the strength, speed, skill and flair that makes rugby sevens such an exciting fast-paced and action-packed sport to watch.

“Women’s rugby is going from strength to strength, with more than 2.7 million women and girls currently playing globally, making up a quarter of the world’s playing population and we have ambitious plans to further advance women in rugby at all levels.

“Accelerating the development of the women’s game is a key strategic objective for World Rugby and the recently launched ‘Team Powered’ campaign is designed to boost the sport’s growth, inspiring a new generation of players and fans to get involved in the ultimate team sport.

“I am sure the next three days of Olympic competition will provide another great leap forward for the global growth of women’s rugby and we are very happy to play our full and exciting part in the most gender equal Games in history.”

New Zealand Coach Allan Bunting said: “The way that I see it is that everyone starts level. What’s happened in the past has been the past and it’s who steps out on the field and makes the most of those 14 minutes each game. It’s an Olympic sport so you’re got to be ready for the best against each team.”

USA Women’s Coach Chris Brown said: “Our experience at the Olympics has been brilliant so far. The atmosphere in the village is one of a kind. We’ve had a sevens style week of training in the sense that we’ve been excellent at times and have had some other moments where we’ve had to find a way to get back on track.

“The biggest challenge for us will be finding a way to allow ourselves to be free in the moment. That’s the key to playing at our absolute best. When we stop trying to control the what ifs and focus on being present and loving the emotional roller coaster of the game, the result follows suit.

Great Britain women’s co-captain Meg Jones said: “We’ve spent the last week refining the final details and we’re really looking forward to the competition kicking off. The biggest thing for us will be stepping onto the pitch after the year that we’ve all had and we’re just so excited. We’ve got huge aspirations for this group, we really want to be contenders and we’ve got a lot of belief in ourselves.”

Great Britain women’s co-captain Abbie Brown: “We’re feeling well prepared and we’re dreaming big for this tournament. We have our sights set on that gold medal, but alongside that, we’re hoping that we can inspire and carve the path for future sevens players which is something that we’re very passionate about as a group.”

Canada Women’s Captain Ghislaine Landry said: “The opportunity to go to another Olympic Games with this team is very exciting. For the last five years, we’ve been training hard and hunting down podium finishes. I’m proud of our team and I know we are heading into the Games with a ton of talent and huge potential. We can’t wait to show Canada, and the world, how fast and exciting rugby sevens is.”

To ensure teams are as best prepared as possible to perform on the greatest sporting stage of all, World Rugby has invested US$4 million into Olympic qualified unions’ sevens programmes and towards the costs of hosting a number of high-performance pre-Olympic preparation events.

Rugby sevens’ first appearance at Rio 2016 had a profound, game-changing effect, attracting an estimated 30 million new fans globally. The dynamic, action-packed nature of rugby sevens has captured the attention of fans around the world, with research showing women and the 18-24 age group were the most strongly supportive of sevens’ fit with the Olympics.

In a sign of the respect shown towards rugby’s values, and a reflection of how well sevens was received on its Games debut in Rio, four players from different countries were awarded the honour of carrying the flag for their country at the Opening Ceremony on Friday, including women’s players Sarah Hirini (New Zealand) and Rusila Nagasau (Fiji).

Women’s rugby is experiencing unprecedented growth in recent years – more than 2.7 million women and girls are currently playing globally, making up a quarter of the world’s playing population. Latest Nielsen Research for World Rugby has reported women’s rugby is on the rise with interest in established markets up to 45 per cent and in emerging markets to 27 per cent, a 15 and 22 per cent increase since 2018, respectively.

World Rugby recently launched the ‘Team Powered’ Women in Rugby marketing campaign, which aims to inspire more women and girls to play and watch the sport. For more information visit www.Women.Rugby.
